Ted Coney is a painter who has been making work about family life and family relationships for over forty years. Although personal, because they are about his family, nevertheless, they often deal with the major themes that everyone can relate to, birth, death, marriage and divorce.

The early pictures are straight 'portraits' of people but increasingly objects and other devices are used to tell the story. Some of the work is more abstract than others, depending on the sensitivity of the subject matter. Others need to be viewed at two different levels, at a distance and close up, to see tiny fragments of information.
